Apprentices
Whether you’re starting your career, looking for a challenge, or just eager for new skills, an apprenticeship could help you work your way into the career you want. Apprenticeships are available all the way up to degree level qualifications, and for all ages.
While some roles are advertised as ‘Apprenticeships,’ all roles can be considered for one if there is a matching qualification, so there are lots of possibilities for staff at any age or level.
Apprenticeships let you combine your current job with part-time learning. You’ll earn impressive qualifications, new skills and improve your CV – all while getting paid. They’re a great way for you to learn and improve your skills and with over 640 apprenticeship standards available, there is something suitable for every role.
Graduates
Our Graduate Scheme provides a unique opportunity for you to get a comprehensive understanding and experience of working in the Council. Over two years you’ll take part in 4 placements with lots of opportunities to develop and learn, as well as get accredited qualifications. You’ll develop skills, knowledge and experience in different departments and teams, and equip yourself with the experience and support to become a future leader.

Work Experience with Manchester City Council
A work experience placement with us gives you a first-hand look at how we work as a council. It helps you build key job skills and gives you an idea of what kind of work you might want to do in the future.
Who Can Apply
We offer work experience placements to:
- Students from Manchester schools, colleges, and universities
- Manchester residents aged 18 and over who are currently unemployed
- University students who need a placement as part of their degree
- Students studying T-Levels

Areas You Can Work In
Manchester City Council has several Directorates, each responsible for different services. Here’s an overview of them and the types of work experience available:
1.Adult Social Care
- Services: We support adults with physical disabilities, mental health issues, learning disabilities, and older people. This includes residential care, day services, home care, and safeguarding.
- Job Roles Social workers, care managers, occupational therapists, support workers, and administrative roles.
2.Corporate Services
- Services: We handle the council’s finance, human resources (HR), IT, and communications. We make sure everything runs smoothly and in line with regulations.
- Job Roles: Accountants, HR professionals, IT specialists, communications officers, benefits and council tax officers, and administrative staff.
3.Chief Executive
- Services: This is the leadership team. They set the strategy, policies, and manage performance. It includes roles in strategic planning, corporate governance, legal services, and public relations.
- Job Roles: Policy advisors, solicitors, legal officers, strategy officers, performance managers, and executive assistants.
4.Children and Education
- Services: We focus on services for children and young people, including early years, education, safeguarding, and family support. Our aim is to improve outcomes for children and keep them safe and well.
- Job Roles: Teachers, social workers, educational psychologists, family support workers, and administrative roles.
5.Growth and Development
- Services: We are responsible for urban planning, economic development, housing, transportation, and infrastructure projects. Our goal is to promote sustainable growth and development in Manchester
- Job Roles: Urban planners, economic developers, project managers, housing officers, and engineers.
6.Neighbourhoods
- Services: We manage services that affect local communities, like waste management, environmental health, highways maintenance, community safety, and parks and leisure. Our focus is on improving the quality of life in Manchester’s neighbourhoods.
- Job Roles: Environmental health officers, engineers, project managers, community safety officers, waste management staff, parks and leisure attendants, and community engagement officers.
What We Offer
Each Directorate offers a variety of roles for people with different skills and backgrounds. Our team will guide and support you, helping you develop your skills and knowledge.
We offer placements of up to 6 weeks and can be flexible with working patterns to suit your needs.
