Neighbourhood teams work with our city's diverse communities to create and maintain clean, safe, and vibrant neighbourhoods that Mancunians can be proud of.
We develop initiatives by working with the people who make up our communities, listening to their views and acting on their concerns.
We aim to make neighbourhoods clean, safe and vibrant, working in teams including:
Neighbourhood teams
We work in every community and are often the first call for residents who need help and support.
Highways
We keep traffic flowing, maintain the public realm and design major new schemes to benefit residents and visitors, working in teams such as network management, design, commissioning and project management, public realm and highways maintenance.
Community Safety, Compliance and Enforcement
We work with the police and others in a partnership to keep residents safe from crime and antisocial behaviour. Among many other things we’re responsible for animal welfare, infectious disease control, noise complaints and trading standards
Waste, Recycling and Street Cleaning
We oversee contractors’ work, also working closely with community groups and residents to boost recycling and explore new routes to a cleaner city.
Parks Service and Grounds Maintenance
We take care of Manchester’s 160 parks and open spaces, 42 allotments and three river valleys.
Libraries
We’re about so much more than the traditional plentiful supply of books. Our 20-plus libraries are valued spaces, nested in the heart of their communities: shop-fronts for lots of other public services and partner organisations – leisure, culture, learning and information.
We’re at the heart of making Manchester fairer for everyone, hosting adult learning – some specifically aimed at getting people back to work. We provide free computer sessions, benefit validation and advice, and many other advice sessions along with youth provision.
We also run a 24-hour virtual library, Manchester Prison library and books at home for those who can’t get out. And we manage Greater Manchester County Record Office which holds records from across the city region.
Local Cultural Organisations
Our culture team promotes the city’s cultural activity in partnership with several local cultural organisations. We also manage Manchester Art Gallery.
Events Team
We manage an exciting range of high-profile cultural, sporting and international events including Manchester Day, The Great Manchester Run, Parklife Festival, Pride Weekend and The National Squash Championships.

Housing
We work to prevent homelessness and find the best long-term alternatives to temporary accommodation. We’re increasing the supply of affordable and sustainable homes and building new homes for all residents. We also manage the Council’s directly owned housing.
Homelessness
We aim to stop households becoming homeless in the first place with specialist advice and guidance to maintain tenancies. If prevention doesn’t work, we house the household and support them to move into a permanent home. We’re also working to end rough sleeping
Housing Services
We deliver all front-line housing services to about 12,500 council-owned homes in North Manchester where we put residents' voices first. Working closely with partners and agencies across the neighbourhoods we’re creating communities where people can thrive and are proud to call home.
We’re leading from the front on zero-carbon using innovative, sustainable solutions, such as carbon neutral home improvements, electric vehicles and equipment, solar panels, ground source heating and having well maintained green spaces throughout our neighbourhoods for everyone to enjoy.
