This role is subject to -

Qualification - Qualification in either Museum Studies or Conservation, or equivalent relevant experience.

This is an exciting opportunity to take up a key role in the ‘Our Town Hall’ team, delivering a once-in-a-lifetime project for the city of Manchester. Work has been underway to restore and refurbish the Grade 1-listed Town Hall since 2017. You will play a vital part in the final delivery phase of the project, ensuring the building and its collections are ready for reopening.

The Collections Officer is responsible for the care and management of the unique Town Hall collection, which includes furniture, sculpture, paintings and social history material. You will manage a programme of conservation, as well as managing the storage and documentation of the collection. You will plan for the return of the collection to the Town Hall, including overseeing the reinstallation of artworks and planning the storage of heritage material in the building. You will have responsibility for procuring and managing a range of specialist contractors.

The Collections Officer also plays an important advisory role in several working groups that focus on the care and protection of the building and its heritage assets.

For more information, or an informal conversation about the role, please contact Meg McHugh, Curatorial Manager: meg.mchugh@manchester.gov.uk

About the Candidate

As part of a fast-moving project, you will have a flexible approach to your work, and you will respond positively to change. You will have excellent organisational and time-management skills and you will be able to manage competing priorities and demands. You will have a problem-solving approach to your work and will be confident working both independently and as part of a team.

The role of Collections Officer requires excellent written and oral communication skills, and you will be able to adapt your style to suit different audiences. You will be confident communicating with external contractors and stakeholders, as well as volunteers and other non-specialists.

You will have experience of collections care and management to a museum standard, and you will be confident to provide expert advice on best practice in this field. You will take a collaborative approach to achieve high standards for the care of the collections within the context of the wider building.

The Collections Officer has a key role on several project working groups that have been established to protect the building and its assets during the construction phase. You will be knowledgeable in the principles of preventative conservation and will advise on how these should be applied in the context of the project.
