About The Role

Working Hours: Multiple,  21 Hours Per Week or 16 Hours Per Week (Weekend and evening work essential )

Contract Type: 14 x Part-Time, Permanent

 Additional Payment: Enhancements are paid for weekend working – time and a half for Saturdays and double time for Sundays 
 

 Work Location: Area based staff will work at all libraries across each area, and from time to time may work at any library across the city according to service need

Our libraries are the beating hearts of our communities, and we are looking for part time Library Assistants to come and join our friendly and supportive teams at libraries across Manchester. These are permanent jobs and offer the benefits of working for a large local authority.  

If you are a people person, have experience and understanding of delivering excellent customer service, along with strong IT skills, then please come and talk to us. 

You would: 

  • Be the first point of contact for customers: 
  • Provide information and deal effectively with customer enquiries, including helping with IT enquiries 
  • Carry out general library duties, help with the security of buildings and basic health & safety tasks, handle and bank cash 
  • Support a wide range of events and activities for all ages – in libraries and in other places: 
  • Be willing to work at any library or location as and when required. 

We have 3 evening sessions where you can come and find out about the range of services delivered and the reality of working for libraries, not the fiction. Our library managers will talk individually to everyone who attends, to see whether you have the skills and expertise for this new chapter in your life.

About the Candidate

Essential requirements for the role: 

Weekend and evening work essential: For all posts, you will be required to work either a Saturday or a Sunday each week (Sundays from September 2026). 16 hour posts are primarily for lunchtime and evening cover

Experience and understanding of delivering excellent customer service

Flexibility to work unsocial hours, including weekends and evenings to meet the needs of the service

Experienced in using ICT and confident in assisting digital delivery
