Experience delivering a range of highways and construction tasks to a high standard

We are looking for an experienced Street Mason Paviour to join our Highways Maintenance Service. In this role, you will help keep Manchester’s streets, pavements and public spaces safe, well‑maintained and accessible for everyone.

You will carry out a wide range of street works, including laying modular paving, kerbs and concrete, installing drainage, forming and reinstating excavations, and setting up safe working areas. You will also operate plant and machinery such as dumpers, rollers and powered tools. A solid understanding of the New Roads and Street Works Act is essential, along with the ability to identify underground utilities and work safely around them.

This is a technical role where you will use your skills, experience and judgement to deliver high‑quality work. You will plan tasks, solve problems on site and provide clear information to colleagues, supervisors and partners. You will often work independently but will also support and guide others when needed.

Health and safety is central to this role. You will follow all safety procedures, use PPE correctly and ensure work areas are secure for both colleagues and the public.

To succeed, you will need strong communication skills, good planning and organisation, and the ability to make practical decisions on site. You will also reflect Our Manchester behaviours by taking pride in your work, working well with others and valuing the diverse communities we serve.

If you are committed to delivering quality work, improving the city and providing a great service to residents, we would like to hear from you.

For an informal discussion, please contact the hiring manager, Andrew Thompson, at an[email protected] to arrange a convenient time to discuss the role.

About the Candidate

We want a candidate who takes pride in their work and cares about the quality of the streets and spaces around them. They should be reliable, practical and confident working outdoors in all conditions. They will understand the importance of doing a job properly, following the right steps and keeping people safe.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience in highways, construction or street works. They will know how to lay modular paving and kerbs, place and finish concrete, install drainage, and complete reinstatements to a high standard. They will be able to read site information, identify underground services and work safely around utilities. They should be comfortable operating plant and tools such as dumpers, rollers and other powered equipment.

We want someone who plans their work well, stays organised and can manage their time without supervision. They will be able to solve problems on site and make sound decisions when things change. They should communicate clearly, listen carefully and work well with colleagues, partners and the public.

The right candidate will live our values. They will take ownership of their work. They will be open, respectful and willing to learn new skills. They will show pride in Manchester and understand the role street environments play in supporting residents, businesses and communities.

They must hold a City & Guilds Level 2 NVQ in Construction and Civil Engineering Operations (Modular Pavement Construction), have full accreditation under the New Roads and Street Works Act, and hold a full UK driving licence. Above all, we want someone who brings a positive attitude, a strong work ethic and a commitment to delivering safe, high‑quality outcomes every day.
